Measuring the wavelength of a laser, due 9/2/08
This is basically a warm-up exercise and a chance to start learning LaTeX. All of your written work for this course must be turned in in LaTeX, so this is a great time to start learning it.
And of course, measuring sub-micron wavelengths with a ruler is just COOL!
Reviewing an article, due 9/9/08
Peer reviewing another person's work is a common writing activity for physicists. Here's a good outline of suggestions to use and think about while reviewing.
We're also going to begin working on the Hall effect. Check these links:
- Wikipedia article about Hall effect
- NIST pages about Hall measurements
- Dr. van der Pauw's original articles
Building a basic op-amp circuit, due 10/3/08
Practice in building and characterizing op-amp circuits -- in this case, one of the most useful circuits in physics: an amplifier.
The spec-sheet for the ALD1701 op-amp is here
