Summer Internships 2007

  • Joel Amato earned a repeat performance as a summer intern at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena working in Parts Engineering Department on quality assurance.
  • Sam Hage was awarded an International Cooperative Education Internship to teach English to native French speakers in Belgium.

Other Students Achievements of Note

  • Tiara Norris earned the National Society of Physics Students Leadership Scholarship.
  • Brendan Diamond was named the Outstanding Student Leader for the College of Natural Sciences.
  • Tiara Norris and Brendan Diamond, along with Dr. Eric Ayars published their paper "Magnetically Coupled Rotors" in the September 2006 issue of the American Journal of Physics.
  • Justin Stimatze and Joel Amato earned a Blake Lilly Award from the National Society of Physics Students for "Overview of Outreach Projects."
  • Brendan Diamond served as Associate Zone Councilor for Zone 18 of the Society of Physics Students.
  • Nick Sanabria and Joel Amato received the Marsh White Award for community outreach with their proposal "Absolute Zero at the Boys and Girls Club." The $300 award is provided by the national Society of Physics Students.
  • Our chapter of the Society of Physics Students won its seventeenth national Outstanding Chapter Award.

Faculty Achievements 2006-07

Dr. Chris Gaffney was part of a team including Maddy L. McCrea-Hendrick, Richard Giberson, and Randy M. Miller that presented a talk entitled, "Studies of the mechanism of microwave-assisted fixation of tissues by formaldehyde" at the American Chemical Society Meeting in Chicago in March 2007.

Dr. Xueli Zou published "Using introductory labs to engage students in experimental design" along with E. Etkina, & S. Murphy in the November issue of the American Journal of Physics. In addition, her article, "The Sandbag Collision" appeared in the October 2006 edition of The Physics Teacher. "Students' design tasks in the introductory physics course," was published in Abstracts of the 2007 AAS Bulletin. She presented four talks at professional meetings this year including "Students' design tasks in the introductory physics course," at the National Winter Meeting of American Association of Physics Teachers in Seattle last January where she serves on the International Physics Education Committee.

Dr. Eric Ayars published "Magnetically coupled rotors" in the American Journal of Physics along with two students, Tiara Norris and Brendan Diamond. He also presented a talk entitled, "Falsification Labs" to a workshop at the American Association of Physics Teachers National Summer Meeting along with Tim Erckson. In addition, he reviewed two books on computational physics for the American Journal of Physics.

Dr. Cheuk-kin Chau earned funding from Advanced Light Technology for his project, "Fragmentation of T. Rubrium."

Dr. David Kagan presented his talk, "Student Report Learning Gains From Pre-class Questions at the National Winter Meeting of American Association of Physics Teachers in Seattle. He earned the Myles Tracy Outstanding Student Organization Advisor Award. He currently serves on the Editorial Board of The Physics Teacher and the Advisory Board for Basic and Applied Academies of Research.
